When it comes to electricity in Vietnam, there are two important factors to consider: plugs and voltage.

The electricity supply in Vietnam is 220 Volts at 50Hz. The most common plug types used are type A (two flat vertical pins), type C, and type F (two round pins). If your power plug has three pins, you will need an adapter, as most electrical outlets here do not have grounding holes.

The following three types of plugs can be used easily in Vietnam:

Power plug type A: 2 vertical pins.

Power plug type C: 2 round pins.

Power plug type F (also known as Schuko plug): 2 round pins.

• For travelers from Europe (excluding the UK):
  Good news! European power plugs are similar to those used in Vietnam, so you won’t need an adapter.
• For travelers from North and Central America or Japan:
  Your plug can be used in Vietnam, but it’s important to check the voltage compatibility, as outlined below.
• For travelers from the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Malaysia, Singapore, or Hong Kong:
  Type G plugs (British plugs) with three rectangular pins can sometimes be used in Vietnam, but they are less common. In most cases, an adapter will be required.
• For travelers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, or parts of China:
  You will need an adapter. However, if your power plug has only two pins (no grounding hole), it may still fit into some outlets if you apply enough force. This is not recommended, as it can damage the plug and create a safety hazard. Only do this as a last resort.

However, even if your plug fits, you must also consider the electricity voltage and frequency.

B. Voltage and Frequency

Vietnam uses an electricity voltage of 220 Volts at 50Hz.

• If your device specifies “100-240V, 50-60Hz,” it means it is compatible with the various voltages used worldwide, including Vietnam. You can use it anywhere, as long as the plug fits.
• For travelers from North and Central America or Japan:
  Your devices use 110V, which differs from the 220V system in Vietnam. Check the label on your device to see if it says “100-240V, 50-60Hz.” If so, you can use it in Vietnam with the correct plug. Otherwise, you will need a transformer to convert the voltage from 110V to 220V.
• For travelers from other parts of the world (except certain areas in the Philippines, Peru, South Korea, and Brazil):
  You likely use 220-240V, which is the same as Vietnam’s electricity supply, so you don’t need to worry much about the voltage.

Where to Buy an Adapter in Vietnam?

You can purchase converters or adapters at electronic stores, grocery stores, or convenience stores while traveling in Vietnam. Alternatively, many hotels offer them for loan. The price for an adapter is typically around $3–4 USD.

Essential Safety Tips When Using Electrical Devices in Vietnam:

• Never use electrical devices when your hands are wet or if you’re in a wet environment.
• Avoid handling power sockets that show any signs of damage.
• Don’t force a plug into a socket if it doesn’t fit. Some electrical plugs in Vietnam may be a different size or may be installed poorly, so look for a suitable socket instead.
• Always be alert for signs of electrical issues, such as unusual sounds or smells.
• Avoid using electronic devices while charging to minimize the risk of accidents.
